This work is an attempt to reinterpret Cranes Beneath Thirty-Six Immortal Poets—a collaborative handscroll by Tawaraya Sōtatsu (painting) and Hon’ami Kōetsu (calligraphy)—through the visual language of contemporary graffiti.
In the original work, the cranes in the background function not as carriers of narrative or explicit meaning, but as a “field” upon which poetic verses are inscribed. In this piece, the crane motif is appropriated from Sōtatsu and repeated using graffiti stencil techniques, thereby constructing a contemporary “field” for inscription.
At the center of this constructed field, the artist’s name—originally written in flowing cursive script in the handscroll—is enlarged and rendered in a manner reminiscent of a graffiti tag. Just as the low legibility and rhythmic line quality of cursive script generate poetic resonance, this work regards graffiti lettering as possessing a similar aesthetic value. By inscribing the name, it embodies the very culture of graffiti itself.
Sōtatsu’s characteristic techniques of tarashikomi (pooling) and ink bleeding did not seek strict control of form; rather, they embraced the process by which ink or pigment settles through contingency and chance as an expressive principle. The black ink drips in this work attempt to reactivate that aesthetic of contingency within the context of contemporary graffiti, articulating a renewed modern sensibility.
