This work begins with a screenshot of the artist’s own bank account balance displayed on a smartphone screen, which is then reconstructed through stencil techniques and hand-drawn interventions. The application name “Olive,” visible in the upper-right corner of the screen, originally functions as a neutral element of the user interface. In this work, however, the addition of the Japanese character en (円, yen) transforms it into the phrase “0-en live” (“living on zero yen”). This is not merely a pun. Rather, it functions as a device that presents the reality of financial precarity in its raw and immediate state. At the center of the composition appears the balance: 981 yen. This amount is plainly insufficient to sustain everyday life and exposes the fragile position of the individual within a capitalist society. The repeated character kin (金, money) scattered across the surface operates not simply as a recurring sign, but as a form of graffiti that visualizes obsession, anxiety, and attachment to money itself. Yet this work is not limited to an indictment of poverty or a presentation of misery. Just as the exposure of “the real” in hip-hop simultaneously serves as the construction of a personal narrative, this work transforms an extreme present condition into the starting point for future ascent. The disclosure of economic reality becomes a gesture of self-definition rather than resignation. The work is intended to develop as an ongoing series. As the account balance changes over time, the language, marks, and visual traces covering the surface will also evolve. In this sense, Bank Painting is not a fixed image but a process that incorporates the fluctuations of time and economic circumstance. Bank Painting transfers the surface of the contemporary financial interface onto the canvas, visually implementing structures analogous to flow and sampling in hip-hop culture. It is an attempt to reclaim the lived reality of an individual from the systems that reduce it to data, returning it to the realm of subjective expression. At the same time, it functions as an experiment that reexamines the relationship between capital and life itself.
